Description The ornamental grass Andropogon gerardii (big blue stem) produces showy and multi-coloured greyish fuchsia blossoms during late summer to late winter. This plant is clump forming and has showy, matte and medium textured foliage that is dark aquamarine in colour.
Typical Uses Border, cut flowers, dried flowers, hedge, screening and wild flower.
Special Characteristics Birds and butterflies are attracted to Andropogon gerardii . Andropogon gerardii is tolerant of drought, wet sites, pollution and salt. In autumn, Andropogon gerardii is alight with fall colour, and in winter it provides winter interest.
Cautions The growth rate of Andropogon gerardii (big blue stem) is fast and you should plan for this in your garden design and layout. Depending upon your local conditions, Andropogon gerardii (big blue stem) may be invasive. Self-sowing, this plant can spread broadly and randomly where conditions are ideal for the seeds to germinate. However, this can be a benefit if you plan to use this plant in naturalizations.
